Installing the USA relay on an Ubuntu 16 VM server

This article describes how to install the USA relay on an Ubuntu 16 virtual machine server.

  1. Download Ubuntu server 16.10.

    Easy install from vmware (optional).

  2. Install the utilities.

    apt-get install openssh-server
    apt-get install vim
  3. If you want a static IP address, edit /etc/network/interfaces

    • Comment out dchp for the main interface.
    • Make the following changes for the main interface by editing the <info> in brackets as needed.
      • iface <ifacename> inet static
      • address <host IP>
      • netmask 255.255.255.0
      • network <host network (ie 192.168.1.0)>
      • broadcast <broadcast (ie 192.168.0.255)>
      • gateway <gateway ip>
      • dns-nameservers <dns IP>
    • Reboot the machine.
  4. Add the Devo repository keys.

    wget http://repository.logtrust.net/PublicKey
    sudo apt-key add PublicKey
    sudo gpg --import PublicKey
  5. Run this command to add the package to the update list.

    sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list.d/logtrust.list
  6. And add:

    deb http://repository.logtrust.net/ precise main
  7. Once you have finished this step, run:

    sudo apt-get update
  8. Install Java on the server.

    apt-get install python-software-properties
    apt install software-properties-common
    add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
    apt-get update
    apt-get install oracle-java8-installer
    • Java-version → should show version, Java SE runtime build and Java Hotspot 64-bit server build.
  9. Now you can install the USA relay.

    apt-cache search logtrust
    apt-get install logtrust-relay-aws-usa
    • Make sure the fprobe settings are correct.
      • Interface might not be eth0, but a "predictable name" instead. Use the ifconfig command to check this.
      • Collector should be localhost:555.
    • Use shift-insert to paste API key copied from the Administration → Credentials area of Devo.
    • Complete the relay installation by answering the rest of the prompts.
  10. Validate relay connectivity and transmission success.

    • Log in to Devo and open the account the new relay is associated with.
    • Go to Administration → Relays. The new relay should appear in the list.
    • Select the new relay, click the ellipsis icon, and select Activate. The relay is now running.
